Spatial switching of quadratic solitons in engineered quasi-phase-matched structures.

چکیده
We show that a variety of quasi-phase-matched structures with engineered patterns can potentially be used for soliton control in quadratic nonlinear media. We study geometries with dislocations, tilts, and wells and predict spatial switching between different output soliton states. Experimental implementation conditions are discussed.

We present a comprehensive overview of different types of parametric interactions in nonlinear optics which are associated with simultaneous phase-matching of several optical processes in quadratic nonlinear media, the so-called multistep parametric interactions. We discuss a number of possibilities of double and multiple phase-matching in engineered structures with the sign-varying second-orde...
متن کاملMultistep cascading and fourth-harmonic generation
A concept of multistep cascading is applied to the problem of fourth-harmonic generation (FHG) in a single quadratic crystal, and a new model of parametric wave mixing is analyzed in detail. Important applications to the optical frequency division and efficient FHG as well as the realization of the double-phase-matching multistep cascading processes in engineered QPM structures with phase-rever...
متن کاملNonlinear phase shift and all-optical switching in quasi-phase-matched quadratic media.
Recently it was shown that in quasi-phase-matched quadratic media the average intensities are subject to an induced Kerr effect. We analytically study the influence of this induced cubic nonlinearity on the amplitude and phase modulation of the fundamental wave and predict efficient all-optical switching.
متن کاملAdiabatic shaping of quadratic solitons.
We show the principle of operation of a setup to adiabatically shape solitons in quadratic nonlinear media to different beam profiles and widths or different fractions of energy carried by the second-harmonic wave. The shaping mechanism is based on soliton generation and propagation in chirped, quasi-phase-matched samples.

The possibility to exploit the relatively high second order nonlinear coefficient available in III-V semiconductors is analyzed in the paper. It is shown that in bulk material too high phase mismatch makes technologically impossible to employ these semiconductors because of a necessary prohibitive threshold power. To bypass this problem, the use of a planar waveguide is proposed. It is shown th...
